Clinically, this system plays an important role in blood transfusion and erythroblastosis fetalis 47,48. Like ABO types, Rh-type refers to proteins on surface of red blood cells. Rh-type is the second most important blood group system after ABO typing. Caucasians are 2x more likely to have a negative Rh factor compared to any other ethnic demographic and 14x more likely to have a negative blood type when compared to people from an Asian ethnicity. The impact of Rh-type on COVID-19 infection deserves a special focus (Table 2). So, for example, if someone is blood type A but lacks the Rh factor, they are A negative. In addition to the A and B antigens, there is a third antigen known as the Rh factor used to name types. The universal plasma donor has Type AB blood. Negative Rh factors are the rarest types of blood. Blood is divided into four groups A, B, AB, and O which are determined based on the presence or absence of antigens in red blood cells. The universal red cell donor has Type O negative blood. The need for O+ is high because it is the most frequently occurring blood type (37% of the population). However, the need for O negative blood is the highest because it is used most often during emergencies. Only 7% of the population are O negative. Types O negative and O positive are in high demand. Minority and diverse populations, therefore, play a critical role in meeting the constant need for blood. Type O is routinely in short supply and in high demand by hospitals – both because it is the most common blood type and because type O negative blood is the universal blood type needed for emergency transfusions and for immune deficient infants.Īpproximately 45 percent of Caucasians are type O (positive or negative), but 51 percent of African-Americans and 57 percent of Hispanics are type O. Why? O negative blood can be used in transfusions for any blood type. When the Rh protein is absent, the blood type is Rh-negative (such as AB- or B-). But if an Rh negative (RhD-) person receives Rh positive (RhD+) blood, their body reacts, making chemicals (antibodies) to defend against the foreign Rh factor.
